What is Window Film?

Window film is a multi-layer polyester material designed to reduce heat, reflect glare, and prevent fade. This transparent laminate film is typically applied to the inside of residential or commercial buildings. Window film attaches to glass with an adhesive that is activated by water and soap during the installation process.

Types of Window Film

Window film does more than just provide tinting to block out the sun. There are different types of window film designed to address a number of common challenges.

  • Sun Control Films

One of our most popular types of window film, sun control films help to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors, enhance energy efficiency, reduce glare, and block harmful UV rays to reduce fading.
  • Safety and Security Films

Security Film adds an invisible layer of protection to your window. 3M’s proprietary tear-resistant adhesive holds the shards of glass together even after the glass shatters, making it more difficult to penetrate the window.
  • Privacy Films

One of the drawbacks of glass is that it is inherently clear. Privacy film can help obscure the view into your home. Films with lower interior reflectivity and higher exterior reflectivity accomplish this.
  • Decorative Films

Decorative window films are a convenient, affordable alternative to etched or sandblasted glass. Our films are available in a variety of textures, patterns, colors, and finishes, presenting endless design possibilities. As needs or styles change, the films can easily be removed or replaced.
  • Custom Films and Graphics

Visually appealing custom film graphics and logos are excellent tools for promoting businesses and making them stand out from the competition. Work closely with our graphics experts and installers to develop custom graphics for your space.
  • Specialty Films

At General Solar, we carry a variety of specialty films designed to address common concerns, including casper cloaking film, anti-graffiti film, stained glass film, bird safety film, distraction bands for safety, and more.
  • Smart Film

Smart Film is an innovative technology that provides privacy on demand. This film seamlessly transitions between its transparent and opaque states with the flip of a switch or press of a button for complete privacy when you need it.
  • Photochroic Film

Similar to transition eyeglasses, photochromic window film darkens when activated by sunlight. It then returns to its clear state when it’s dark or when the sun is less intense. As the film darkens when activated, the amount of light that filters through the film reduces and the amount of heat that it rejects increases.
